We will start our journey through the Czech and Moravian spas in the first town of the West Bohemian triangle, and that is Františkovy Lázně.
Františkovy lázně together with Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně form the world-famous West Bohemian triangle. It is located in the middle of a forested plateau at an altitude of 400 m, in the western part of the Cheb Basin. There are accumulated 21 mineral springs, a dry gas spring and a ferrous sulphide bog, which is an essential product in FL for treatment.
The first sources of the occurrence of mineral water date back to 1406. During the Thirty Years’ War, water was exported to all major European cities.
At the request of Dr. Adler founded a spa town – the village of Emperor Francis. The application was approved on April 27, 1793 by Francis I of Habsburg and this day is therefore considered the date of establishment of the village. It was not until 1807 that it was renamed Františkovy lázně.
The construction was situated according to the plans of Abbot Gruber symmetrically according to today’s Národní třída with the dominant feature of the pavilion of František’s spring. In 1820, the Catholic Church of the Exaltation of St. Crisis.
In 1828, at the request of the castle governor Riedl from Prague, the French parks were transformed into English ones, thus creating the overall concept of the spa parks, which is preserved to this day. The parks are well maintained, creating a wonderful atmosphere of the city, which is actually located in the middle of nature. No other buildings and alterations disturbed this atmosphere either.
Construction development was practically completed in the 19th century. The newest buildings are the B. Němcová Theater and the Glauber Springs Hall, and the newest Aquaforum, which was built in 2005. It is very sensitively embedded in the city’s architecture.
Thanks to this, the spa has been preserved practically unchanged from the last century as a unique example of the so-called spa architecture to this day.
In 1852, Františkovy lázně became an independent municipality and in 1865 a town.
Many important guests came to the spa, Emperors Francis I, Ferdinand II, Ferdinand III, Tsar Alexander, Prince Metternich, Chancellor Bismarck, poets Goethe and Schiller, composers L.van Beethoven, Johann Strauss and also writer Božena Němcová, Jan Neruda , František Palacký and others.
